Kitooma Primary School is one of the schools we support. The school is located in a remote location on the mountains surrounding Lake Bunyonyi. During our team visit to the school in August 2023, we were informed about the renovation of one of the school buildings that was being worked upon. During previous visits we had seen that the building in question was indeed in poor condition.

Community members, parents and teachers had removed the old roof of the building, which was in poor condition, and demolished part of the walls. A wall between two classrooms had also been removed; The underlying idea was to combine two classrooms into one large classroom, so that the space could be used both as a classroom for the largest group of pupils and as an auditorium. Work was underway to bring the remaining walls back to the required height using still usable old bricks and newly fired bricks (in Uganda it is very common to manufacture bricks at very low cost from a specific mixture of soil and water in self-prepared temporary ovens).

As a team, we greatly appreciate such a project, in which the community, parents and teachers work together to realize a plan that is in the interest of the future of their children; in fact, we believe it is very important that the local population makes an effort, where this can reasonably be expected of them, in the interests of both their own development and that of their children. Where we see such an effort, we are happy to raise funds to finance expensive materials such as roof panels, doors and windows. With the help of raised funds, work has recently been done to complete the renovation of the building in question.

In addition, we have used raised funds to install lightning protection  on two eligible buildings at Kitooma Primary School. All schools in our working area that we support are located on the mountains surrounding Lake Bunyonyi and the risk of lightning strikes is real. In 2021, Mwendo Primary School was struck by lightning with all its consequences. After Mwendo Primary School and Kasinde Primary School, Kitooma Primary School is the third school that we have provided with lightning defenses.

We thank the Dutch capital fund that we found willing to finance both the renovation of the school building and the installation of lightning protection.

Last but not least, we also thank the Kitooma community, the parents, and the team for their fantastic cooperation in realizing this project, both with each other and with us! Their combined efforts and positive attitude played a major role in our decision to come to offer support.
